Peter Dukes
An Obstetrician and Gynaecologist retired ten years but still doing a small amount of teaching in the University O & G Dept.
His main interests now are grandparenting and travel and a little bit of family history. Peter recently discovered that his father's mother's paternal grandfather was the first European to be buried in Nelson in 1841. Uncertain whether the diagnosis was typhoid or typhus but they buried him on Haul-a-shore Island at the entrance to the harbour because of the infection. He really died on arrival in Nelson. His wife arrived six months later on the another ship with their three children to find he was dead. She then married a man whose wife had died in transit on the same ship who also had three children and they proceeded to have another six!!
Peter presented The Pain of Labour - 1 in 2012
