Ellen Mary Pettit

Born Dunedin 7 Oct 1868 — Died Feilding 28 Feb 1953

Nurse at Wellington Hospital 1896 – 1902

Matron Wellington Hospital 1902 – 1904

Matron Rotorua Sanitorium 1904 – 1905

Married John Haliburton 1905, a widower with three grown-up sons. They lived in Feilding and John, who was 30 years older than Ellen, died in 1915.

Ellen remained in Feilding. During the 1918 influenza epidemic, provision was made for a temporary hospital in the local parish hall and Ellen volunteered to be ‘Matron’.
