John Ewart
House surgeon appointments in England before working as a clinical assistant in Aberdare, Wales. Poor health prompted him to emigrate to NZ in 1887, joining his family who had travelled there in 1885.

Resident Surgeon Superintendent, Wellington Hospital 1889 – 1909
Honorary Visiting Surgeon, Wellington Hospital 1909 – 1912
Honorary Consulting Surgeon, Wellington Hospital 1913 – 1922
He was a very skilled surgeon and a popular clinician with both colleagues and his patients. He was responsible for the introduction of improved aseptic surgical techniques, and he ran a very busy Outpatient service. Ewart Hospital which opened in 1910 was named after him.
