In 1935, he embarked on a period of postgraduate study into thoracic surgery and anaesthesia, visiting Melbourne, the Brompton Hospital in London (with Tudor-Edwards and Clement Price-Thomas), and Vienna.
On return to Wellington in 1936, he set up thoracic surgery though remained a general surgeon.
