Went to England in 1913 to study for the FRCS, but when WW1 started, he joined the RAMC and served in France with distinction.
Medical Superintendent, Wellington Hospital 1919 – 1921
He began a new career in farming at the beginning of 1922. His wife, Airini Rhodes, had inherited Blue Cliffs sheep run, and Randal became the station manager.
