Educated at Berkamstead School, Middlesex.
Medical studies at University College Hospital, London
Awarded the Jelf Medal in 1914 for the most brilliant student in science in all London Medical Schools
During WW1, served with the NZMC in Belgium
Assistant Surgeon to Dr Henry Pickerill in the maxillo-facial surgery hospital at Sidcup, Surrey 1918 – 1919
When Dr Pickerill moved this unit to Dunedin in 1919, Sydney went with him and they worked together there
He then went to the Hanmer Military Hospital, Hanmer Springs, working there until 1921 when he returned to England to undertake postgraduate surgical studies at St Georges’ Hospital
